Main Street Volunteers Support Goat Grazing at Houston Arboretum
The Houston Arboretum & Nature Center is a 155-acre nature sanctuary located in the heart of urban Houston, providing vital protection for native plants and animals amidst the city's development. As one of the first nature education facilities for children in Texas, the Arboretum serves over 400,000 visitors annually and offers nature education to more than 10,000 children each year. With its diverse habitats, including woodland, meadow, savanna, and wetland, the Arboretum is a hub for conservation and environmental education.
On March 19th, 2025, Main Street Capital volunteers supported a unique project alongside the Arboretum’s Conservation staff, preparing paths through dense understory brush in anticipation of the arrival of 150 goats. The goats, brought in through a collaboration with Rent-A-Ruminant Texas, are part of an innovative grazing technique to manage overgrown landscapes. Main Street volunteers helped clear a 3-foot-wide path to facilitate the installation of fencing, keeping the goats in designated areas. Main Street also donated $10,000 to support the project’s efforts, ensuring the success of this environmentally friendly solution for landscape management.
